Chapter Seventeen

Two days in a hospital bed, albeit a surprisingly comfortable one, were more than Grace could lay still for. The doctor had said through the weekend, but with the poking and prodding she was receiving at all hours of the day and night, she would get better rest in her own bed at home. She would hire a private nurse if necessary, but whatever the doctor said, Grace would leave to spend Sunday morning at home.

Clive folded the last of her clothes and placed them into her overnight bag while she brushed her hair in bed with the aid of a hand mirror. “You look beautiful, my sweet.”

“I look pale, and my hairdresser would faint if she saw me in this condition.”

Clive closed Grace’s bag with all her things inside before sitting at the foot of the bed. He handed her a lipstick case. “Your favorite shade. You always say good lipstick can camouflage a multitude of sins.”

“Which is why my lipstick bill has doubled in the last few years.”

“I know.” He patted her leg before sitting in the guest chair. Only he and Greta, to a certain extent, were privy to her downward spiral until last week’s debacle with Rose. The pathetic attempt to rekindle a one-sided love was a fool’s errand. The embarrassment would have necessitated a fresh tube of lipstick the next day if Greta hadn’t confronted her about the lump after quenching a physical need. Focusing on her health was better than lingering in heartache.

Greta was no different from every woman she’d taken to bed. They all reminded her of Rose but failed to distract her from the misery of having let go of the only woman who had effectively replaced Harriet in her heart. However, Greta had a way of making her wish they both weren’t so broken. A life with her would have been pleasing.

The door swung open. Doctor Shapiro stepped through right on time. He’d made Grace his first stop for yesterday’s morning rounds and had promised to do so again today. He was a doctor eager to please the hospital’s largest benefactor. Though she didn’t ask for special treatment, she would appreciate it if it meant she could be home by brunch today.

Clive rose and stood bedside, giving the doctor room to examine her.

“Good morning, Mrs. Parsons. You look much better today.” Shapiro reviewed the patient chart hanging from a clipboard at the foot of the bed.

“I feel much better.”

“Let’s take a look under the bandage.” Shapiro gently moved her gown out of the way and lifted the bandage on the breast he’d operated on. “Everything looks like it’s healing nicely.”

“Good enough to send me home today?” Grace put on her acting face to get the answer she wanted. “With all the chaos and attention I’ve generated, I’m not getting much sleep. I would recover more quickly at home.”

“I’ve inquired about a home nurse,” Clive said. “We can have one to our home to check on her twice daily starting this afternoon.
